Ten Maxims

Ten Maxims revealed by our Masters in Sahaj Marg system of spiritual practice plays this vital role in the lives of aspirants (abhyasis) who adhere to the maxims. Meditation helps us in two ways. It regulates the mind and prevents it from going wayward only seeking material achievements. Secondly in meditation or through meditation we start feeling the presence of heart. We had totally forgotten its existence. Feeling the presence of heart is the beginning of our journey in the inner world of spirituality and continued practice in this manner takes us to the final stages of constant remembrance.

But to achieve an important goal, a disciplined and systematic approach is of paramount importance. Even to do meditation and get desired results quickly, a systematic preparation is very important. Following the Ten Maxims gives us this systematic approach towards the whole spiritual practice.

Time management is critical in the execution of any project. The right time to do the right job is given utmost importance even in worldly projects. The first maxim gives us the information regarding the best time suited to do meditation to achieve our goal. Our goal is to reach the divine stage and merge in that condition, which existed even before creation began. This is the calm and tranquil state of the divine in its pure consciousness state. The importance of the posture and adherence of the same place and seat is described in the first maxim for the benefit of the practicants. The heat energy, a product of the latent motion of the particles from the calm and tranquil state of the pure consciousness, started the process of creation. And the ever-increasing intensity of the heat developed, started expansion. The heat of the sun is the material aspect of the same heat, which caused the creation and is the reflection of the original heat. Our aim in spiritual practice is to reach the stage of pure consciousness, which was there before the creation started. The reflection of this state is the sandhya, which is the dawn or dusk when the material heat is at its lowest level. We can see the logic of this approach when we realize that when we meditate at this time the entire environment both external and internal will be a reflection of the original conditions of calmness and tranquility existing at the time of creation. This time will be of immense support for a practicant to easily move into the original condition of pure consciousness state. Since our goal is to reach that level of purity, the stress is given in this maxim to keep mind and body pure which will again support our journey towards the final goal.

An archer can never hit the mark unless his attention is fixed on it. An abhyasi needs to be like the archer and keep his attention ever fixed on the goal.
