Living the Divine Life

The Example of Babuji Maharaj

We are assembled here today to celebrate the holy and auspicious birth anniversary of my revered and beloved Master, Revered Babuji Maharaj. An auspicious occasion is one which is filled with opportunity and promise. The life of my great and benevolent Master affords a perfect example of how opportunities, properly grasped and utilised, can take an ordinary and humble human being up to the highest and loftiest pinnacles of divinised humanness.

His life, His growth, His culminating achievement offer to us the perfect example of a human life correctly and purposefully lived, utilising each and every opportunity exclusively for the singled-minded purpose of becoming a divinised human being, which He has stated emphatically to be the goal of human life. The fact that Babuji Maharaj, beginning from humble and average human conditions was nevertheless able to become a Master of the highest calibre must build in all of us the firm foundation for the unshakable faith that must imbue our own spiritual lives, and add strength and determination to our efforts to achieve what He achieved. His teachings, the practice of Sahaj Marg as a system, and the Mission which He has created for us and pledged to our service form the ladder up which we must climb, step by step, to ensure our own success in this endeavour.

His divine and all-embracing, all-forgiving love heartens and ennobles us with the divine promise of His eternal and abiding service to humanity. This is His promise for our own success in becoming like Him if we would but emulate Him in His human-ness, in His love and devotion for His Master, in His total faith in the possibility of achieving mergence with His Master, and in the unfaltering dedication to His service.

"You are really that which you have to become" says my divine Master. When we look to the outer world we feel puny, awed by the vastness of the Universe, frightened by life with all its awesome responsibilities, weakened by the temptations for desire fulfillment, and anguish and fear envelop us, however manfully we may strive to overcome them. Therefore the average human person becomes frustrated, and is often defeated even before he begins the task for which he has taken birth as a human being. But if one were to look inwards, into the innermost recesses of his or her own Self, then one can see there the effulgent magnificence of Him who resides there within each and every being. He is the real "I," the Lord and Master of all creation and of every one of us. When this is perceived, then courage is restored to the one who has seen. The understanding of this vital truth that He is I, and therefore I am no weak, miserable and soul-less person but the divine spark covered and made almost invisible by my own self-created grossness, gives us the courage and the determination to undertake the glorious task of unveiling the Lord and Master residing within, exposing Him and hiding ourselves. Then the miracle takes place, that the weak, bitter and purposeless "I" which has been parading upon the ignoble stage of a worldly existence drops off, and the true "I", the eternal Lord, the Self seated within, emerges, thus bringing our human endeavour to a divinely happy and auspicious culmination.

Sahaj Marg makes a divine adventure a glorious, safe and assured possibility within the short span of a human life. I pray that Revered Babuji Maharaj may bless all humanity so that each and every soul, lying imprisoned in the darkness of ignorance and grossness may be awakened to this divine possibility which a study of His life reveals to us. One who is not awakened to the possibility of something can never undertake to search for it. My Master's life itself awakens us to our goal, and in emulating Him exists the only possibility of becoming like Him. On this auspicious occasion may His divine love and blessings be showered upon all, so that more and more persons are awakened to the possibility, and become enthused and emboldened to strive for it.
